Mattel is moving with the times. Nowadays, they no longer want to represent an ideal of beauty, but to encourage girls to accept themselves as they are. In the new collection it is possible to find dolls with prostheses, without hair and with many other imperfections.
This week Barbie unveiled the new Barbie Fashionistas collection. There are also dolls in wheelchairs, without hair or with prosthetics. With this, the company is trying to follow the trend of diversity and self-acceptance. Mattel has long been criticised precisely because of its promotion of an ideal of beauty. With the new collection, however, it proves that even Barbie is not perfect. Contemporary Barbies are not meant to represent an ideal of beauty, but to encourage children to embrace their own beauty.
The company claims it wants to promote a more diverse view of beauty. According to Mattel, such beauty lies not in perfect measurements, but in uniqueness. Barbie, however, has been working on this since 2015, when it introduced a collection of dolls with 35 skin tones and 94 hair styles. Since then, Mattel has also released gender-neutral dolls, or even hijab-wearing dolls.
